Basement: CLOSED Far Creek Run is OPEN & has some deep ruts & mud. Near Creek has some muddy spots, Hike N Bike around them.

We have have rain predicted off & on.  There may be some dry days for trail riding.  If we get more rain use the pavement a while .

East Trailer Run/Log Jam:  Opened up on Friday 6/26  There is part 2 of a boardwalk system in place.

Basement:  CLOSED

Updated June 29, 2009  by No-air Bud

This portion of the trail always takes longer to dry.  We have a bypass set up that takes you half way into the Log Jam.  It might take another month for these sections to dry.  So please be patient and tread lightly.

We can ride the high ground only @ this time.  This leads to 2 way traffic, please ride with CAUTION, WEAR A HELMET.  Uphill rider has right of way !  If you hear a bike coming head on, holler to alert them to your position.

Please do not ride when conditions are wet  and muddy as it only damages the trail.  Ride the pavement.

Click here to see salt creek water levels.  The lower portion of the trail are flooded at 5.5'.

There will be a demo day sponsored by the local TREK stores next month Thursday July 2nd from 2-7 PM.  They will be bringing Mt bikes and road bikes to take for a spin @ the trails & county roads near Westville, IN.  The trails of Bluhm Co. See you on the trails,

Speak

There was a front rim & tire found on or about June 2nd in the gravel parking lot @ the Glen.  If it is your tire email me describing the rim/tire   @  bud.hettrick@outbacktrail.org  and I will supply YOU w. the email of the guy who has possession of it.  We all space stuff off & we'd like to get this back to the owner.

Let me know,

Ride

Don't forget the 4 race Time Trial Series of NIMBA & Outback Trails starts this weekend.  The 1st race of the series is @ T.K. Lawless near Vandalia, MI.  It is about an. hour and 20 min. from Portage.  You can find maps to get there from our web site.  NIMBA has some good riders,  so be ready to run w. a fast crowd.

Have fun,

No-air Bud

Ride

Our group ride is every Wednesday night  & started last week.  About 12- 15 riders showed up & we got in a good lap on the Dark Side reverse route.   Basement is CLOSED, it  may not dry out for some time,  Lets hope this weeks predicted rain is light & spotty so we can hook up again for a good ride.  Some of the "racer boys" show up @ 5 pm to bang out an extra lap.  If you are up to it, go for it.  I'm not ready for 2 laps yet so see ya  @ 6.

See you in the gravel lot @ 6 pm.

Respect

Ride with care as in muddy conditions many riders go in REVERSE to avoid the FAR CREEK RUN where most of our trail is in a flood plain.  This leads to 2 WAY TRAFFIC.  The UP-hill riders are to have the trail vs. the DOWN - Hill riders who should yield track.  IT's not a perfect world so be careful if you encounter riders in the reverse direction.

A work crew of seven of us got the new signs & split rail fencing on the Iron Horse completed.  Thanks to Jamie,Lyle, Pete, Eric, Rick,Daniel & myself.   It is our hope that with some physical barriers and more improved signs people will be more aware that there is mixed user traffic on the Iron Horse.    The new signs are @ the 4 main intersections where the Outback / Ironhorse share the paved trails.

Thanks again to the crew for gettin this done in 1/2 a day & we still had time to spend as we wanted.  Special thanks to Lyle who worked a midnite shift, took a short nap and worked his butt off for 5 more hours on the trail.

The signs were paid for by NOAA & Indiana DNR's Lake Michigan Coastal Program Grants.  The split rails were from a Pfizer Grant courtesy of Ryan.  We have one more section to complete & that should happen in two weeks.

Enjoy the trails,

We all use bicycles as a tool for recreation.  But every once in a while we need to be reminded of the that the bicycle is the transportation vehicle for every man as it requires no fuel except what we put in our mouths.  In some nations, access to a bicycle (even those things they sell at Wal-Mart) can be a life changing experience facilitates economic mobility for those who can afford them.  Check out this article at http://cnn.com about Pedals For Progress.

If you enter Imagination Glen from SR-149 parking is available in the Steel Wheels BMX parking lot.  This lot is located on the north side of the Iron Horse Trail just next to the BMX track.  The BMX double gate is being left open so all trail users can park OFF of the Iron Horse Trail.  Please do not park along the Iron Horse Trail  as there are Portage Park maintenance vehicles and Enstrom Storage clients who use this as a road way.  There is a long single gate that leads into the soccer complex.  If that gate is left open DO NOT PARK in the soccer complex.  That single main gate is locked at night and you do not want to be locked in.  Look at one of Webmaster Will's maps and this will all make perfect sense.

Enjoy the trails,

One of the most important aspects of cycling is your pedalling technique.  An efficient technique can add a significant amount of power to your pedaling.  I found this excellent article discussing the different pedaling techniques.  It's a great thing to practice on a stationary bike in preparation for spring.

President Obama last week signed into law the 160-bill Public Lands Omnibus Management Act, legislation that is largely positive for the mountain biking community. IMBA and local riders were directly involved in negotiations concerning individual bills that directly affect mountain biking. In most cases, mountain bikers’ proactive approach preserved traditional singletrack experiences. However, important singletrack was lost in two states.

Mountain bikers are buzzing about a $600,000 federal funding appropriation to expand Paradise Royale, a purpose-built mountain bike trail in California's King Range National Conservation Area (NCA). The funds derive from the 2009 omnibus appropriations bill (H.R.1105), which became law on March 30, 2009, (P.L. 111-8). The appropriation follows years of work by IMBA California Policy Advisor Tom Ward, who lobbied representatives in both the House and Senate.
